A possible meteorite crashed through a New Jersey familys roof on Monday, according to police.
A small, metallic rock struck the roof of a ranch-style home on Old Washington Crossing Pennington Road in Hopewell Township, just north of Trenton, on Monday, according to the Hopewell Township Police Department.
Photos shared by the police show the suspected meteorite, which is oblong and measures about four inches by six inches. According to police, it “penetrated the roof, the ceiling and then impacted the hardwood floor before coming to a rest.”
No injuries were reported. Police said they contacted “several other agencies” for help confirming whether the object is in fact a meteorite, and “safeguarding residents and the object.”
If the object is a meteorite, it may be associated with the Eta Aquariids meteor shower, which is active from about mid-April to late May, and peaked May 5–6, according to the American Meteor Society. The Eta Aquariids are strong near the southern tropics, but north of the equator typically produce medium rates of activity just before dawn.
