The last full moon of winter rose on Tuesday night, known as the “Worm Moon,” according to the Old Farmers Almanac.
A video shared by Dean Regas, an astronomer at the Cincinnati Observatory in Ohio, shows the moon glowing orange shortly after moonrise Tuesday night.
“Check out the shimmering edges. It was so jagged in the telescope like looking at a mirage,” Regas tweeted alongside the video.
According to the Old Farmers Almanac, the name of the Worm Moon likely refers to the beetle larvae that emerge from the thawed bark of trees, not the ordinary earthworms that appear in spring.
The full moon of March is also known as the Lenten Moon when it arrives before the spring equinox, which is on March 20 this year.
