Satellite imagery shows Hurricane Julia making landfall in Nicaragua as a Category 1 storm early Sunday. A video shared by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere at Colorado State University shows the center of the cyclone approaching Nicaragua. Though the storm weakened after making landfall, near Laguna de Perlas around 1:15 a.m., hurricane-force winds and heavy rain caused significant damage. According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Julia weakened to a tropical depression on Monday, and is expected to dissipate Monday night. As of 10 a.m. CT, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. The agency said life-threatening flash floods and mudslides are likely to continue across Central America and Southern Mexico through Tuesday.
