Satellite imagery shows Hurricane Ian strengthening Monday, and it is expected to quickly intensify as it approaches Cuba and Florida, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. A video shared by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere at Colorado State University shows the storms outer bands covering Cuba on Monday as the eye tracks north, toward the western part of the island. Ian struck the Cayman Islands overnight Sunday and into Monday. As of 2 p.m. ET Monday, Ian was a Category 1 storm with sustained winds near 85 mph and higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center. The agency said the storm is forecast to become a major hurricane late Monday or early Tuesday near western Cuba. In preparation for landfall in Florida this week, Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency over the weekend, and warned residents to be ready for possible evacuations and power outages.
