Hurricane Nicole made landfall on the east coast of Florida just south of Vero Beach as a Category 1 storm at around 3 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center. Satellite imagery shared by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere at Colorado State University shows the center of Nicole making landfall. Anticipated storm surge levels were between 1 and 5 feet, according to the National Hurricane Center. Most of Floridas eastern coast remained under coastal flood advisories Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Nicole quickly weakened back into a tropical storm over land, but “all coastal counties” have reported erosion, flooding of coastal roadways, and structures falling into the ocean, according to the National Weather Service Melbourne. As of 7 a.m. Thursday, Nicoles maximum sustained winds had decreased to 60 mph with higher gusts, the agency said. Despite reduced wind speeds, Nicole remains a very large storm with significant rainfall. The storm is expected to weaken into a tropical depression over Georgia Thursday night or Friday.
